Before Your Morning Coffee, Try This (Small Habits, Big Difference #1)

October 26, 2026by Bill Feaverin Health and Wellness

What's the first thing you drink when you get up in the morning?

For a lot of us, it's coffee. Some of us don't even want to talk until we've had that first cup. I understand completely.

Lately I've been reading a book called The Eternal Norse by Astrid and Erik Halvorsen, and it has me thinking about the little habits we develop over the years. The ones we never stop to question because we've done them the same way every morning for decades.

Here's one that caught my attention.

This is Habit #1 in my Small Habits, Big Difference series.

Your body has gone all night without a drink

Think about it for a minute. After sleeping all night, our bodies haven't had anything to drink for several hours.

Water helps keep our bodies hydrated, supports normal body functions, and helps lubricate our joints. At our age, I'll take any help my joints can get.

So why not start the morning with a nice big glass of water?

Then enjoy that coffee.

No, I'm not giving up my coffee

Let me be clear. I'm not giving up my coffee, and I'm certainly not suggesting you give up yours.

I'm just talking about changing one small habit. One glass of water before the cup you were going to drink anyway. That's the whole idea.

What farming taught me about little things

I spent much of my life farming. Harvest gets all the attention, but the crop is made long before that, in all the ordinary days of watering and tending when it doesn't look like much is happening.

And no farmer waits until the plants are wilting to turn the water on.

Little things done consistently make a big difference down the road. I learned that in the field, and I keep learning it again now.

Taking care of the body God gave us

The older I get, the more I realize that taking care of the body God gave us matters. Not in some big, dramatic way. In small daily choices like this one.

That's one reason I've become interested in Zilara and its health and wellness products. I'm enjoying learning more about wellness and sharing what I discover along the way.

And yes, I'm going to tell my wife about this one.

An easy way to make it stick

If you'd like to give it a try, a few simple things can make it easier:

  • Set a clean glass next to the coffee pot before you go to bed.
  • Keep a pitcher of water in the fridge so it's ready when you are.
  • Drink your water while the coffee brews. By the time the pot is done, so are you.

If your doctor has given you guidance on how much to drink, follow that. I'm a retired farmer and teacher, not a doctor.

So, which one are you?

Here's my question for you. Are you a coffee first person or a water first person?

Tell me in the comments below. I'd love to know. And if you're a coffee first person, try water first for one week and come back and tell me how it went.

If you're curious about Zilara and what I'm learning, leave the word WELLNESS in the comments or send me a message, and I'll get back to you.

One little change at a time. Just keep moving forward.

Bill

P.S. If you'd rather look around on your own first, you can take a free 72-hour tour of Zilara here at your own pace. It's my personal link, so if you ever join through it I earn a commission, and it doesn't cost you anything extra.
